Ronald Robert Myerscough
3 Feb 1933 -19 Jul 2019
I received this, "Memories of Ronald" from a younger brother.
I thought it would make a loving & lasting tribute to Ronald Robert Myerscough
Not only did Ron pull Me out of the Bay at Mordialoc, He would also join up with the many picnics on the foreshore. My age group in the races allowed me to get a bag of lollies, Ron would also get the same in his age group, nobody ever challenged us. Mum’s Uncle & Aunty lived close by, Uncle Frank hired out boats in the creek, which he lent to us & one of his sons’ worker at the Carnival, he was in charge of the Dodgem Cars so he was pretty popular with us. We got cars & compete to see who could bump each other off course.
We also loved to go fishing in the Bay with the Pascoe’s in one of old Franks boats.
We never ever got any pocket money. Ron was responsible for feeding the chooks, there were
5 cages with 10 birds in each cage, the feed for them same in bags which Ron would empty into bins. He would then recruit me to help him hold the tops of bags while he filled them with moo poo which would then be sold to the neighbours. There was a couple of dairy farms so there was no shortage of Prairie Cakes.
Ron also studied passages of the Bible as member of the Sunday School, sat the exam set by the Hierarchy of The Church, he topped in the State so that was another string to his bow. The Coburg Church was a Mother to a new Church in Derby St & Ron typically became a Sunday School Teacher. He gets a mention in History of that Church
The Church Gymnasium that we attended was affiliated with the suburban Youth Movement that conducted all sorts of competitions particularly over the school holidays. Ron won the Musical comp up against Trumpets, Trombones; many other instruments, He also entered a cooking comp with a batch of scones, yes he won that too with honorable mentions. One of the activities entailed a walk from the YMCA to the South Melba Town hall, it was some sought of Pantomime, during the interval they had a supposedly
clever mental arithmetic kid. The MC asked all sought of questions multiplication, division, each time
my big Brother beat him to the answer, the looks he got from the MC was enough to say he wasn’t pleased.
Ron’s chosen Sport when he started at the Coburg High School was Tennis, he was 11 & rubbed shoulders with names like Asley Cooper, Neil Fraser, Frank Sedgmen who were all students & similar age, he was not that far behind them as a player.
The house we occupied in Coburg had a drive & paths. Dad would frame what he wanted & where he would measure the mixture required, concrete etc. Ron with me as his assistant, mixed with shovels, ready for the arrival home from work ready to trowel. The drive alone was about 8ft & at least 80 ft long, so he didn’t get it all that easy.
Ron also had a sense of humour; he had a pet magpie with a broken wing, which he used wrap up to try & cure. It used to wait at the gate for Jan to arrive, she wore shoes that were perforated around the toes which the magpie would peck, she would scream until somebody came. Ron didn’t hurry to comply.
Jan also suffered when he studying to be a Doctor, he asked her to get some milk out of the fridge,
when she opened the door there was a human brain on display.
Me as a very youngster, he sent in to the Grocers to enquirer how much a dozen rooster eggs cost.
I thought he had an aeroplane & a pilot’s license, we thought he was thinking of becoming a missionary, Jan thought he hired it.
He had a family trust which Mavis was a signatory but when he needed to pay his tax she wouldn’t sign the withdrawal. Real serious stuff. I think it was because he wouldn’t pay Andrews Ivanhoe Grammar School fees. Andrew was wasting his time at the school & didn’t want to get a degree? In Big Nippers Gap years, he worked at 2 Chemist Shops, daytime at Moonee Ponds & late night at Kew.
Thank you Jim for sending us your precious memories

John Roy Myerscough
1934- 2019
Yesterday I received a message from John's daughter Jill telling us the news that John had passed away on the 23 October 2019
I will copy the note into this as Jill gives a very wonderful description of John's life of 85 years
My father John Roy Myerscough sadly passed away on October 23 2019, we had his funeral yesterday 15 Nov 2019
He was born in Rawtenstall in 1934 to John Myerscough and Gladys (nee Ashton).
Dad became manager of Rawtenstall Astoria ballroom in 1959 and went on to book famous groups to play there including The Hollies and The Who. The ballroom was a family business having previously been a blacksmiths owned by his grandfather John Robert Myerscough who realised that horses were going out of fashion and converted to owning a car salesroom. He had two sons John (my Dad’s father) and Noel.
During the depression of the 1930’s when people could not afford cars, they converted the car showroom into The Astoria Ballroom.
In the mid 60’s the local council decided to build a road through the Astoria ballroom.
Dad then moved to Southport and went on to set up his own printing company
The Ainsdale Press (now run by his son, my brother John Robert Myerscough).
He met and married my Mum, Julie. They had 3 children Jill (me), Katy and John Robert
& Eight grandchildren.
RIP John our Prayers and condolences to the Family

Ronnie Myerscough died whilst driving his beloved vintage tractor in
Cockerham Tractor Run on Saturday, May 11.
Ronnie Myerscough, aged in his 80s, suddenly became unwell at the wheel of his beloved vintage tractor whilst taking part in Cockerham Tractor Run on Saturday (May 11).2019
A convoy of around 100 tractors had set off from Cockerham Village Hall at 6pm to the delight of dozens of families who came out to watch the spectacle. The colorful parade of tractors winded their way through five miles of country lanes, from Cockerham Village Hall to Wyresdale, near Scorton, before Mr Myerscough reported feeling unwell.
At 6.56pm, an air ambulance was dispatched to the beauty spot, along with an advanced paramedic and a rapid response team. Despite the swift arrival of the emergency services, paramedics were unable to revive Mr Myerscough, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ronald was married to Joyce nee Parker in 1961,their son Carl was born 1966.
Ronald was the eldest son of George & Elsie May Myerscough nee Fallows
Mr Myerscough had been a popular figure among tractor enthusiasts in the North West and in the local community. He had taken part in a number of tractor runs in Lancashire, including the Garstang Tractor Run in December 2018.
Our prayers are with the family

Yorkshire Post 31 May 2014
ONE of York cricket’s most respected characters has died.
George Myerscough, a former league president who was inducted into the Hunters York & District Senior League’s Hall of Fame two years ago, passed away at his home in Heworth on Wednesday, aged 82.
Born on November 11, 1931, at Welburn, Myerscough played football and cricket in his younger days but his sporting career took off at Gleneagles Youth Club, in Tang Hall, where he met his first wife, Marion.
Competing in football, cricket and athletics, he was one of the fastest 100 and 220 yard runners in York and the surrounding areas and won many trophies. He was drafted into the Royal Air Force for National Service, completing basic training at West Kirby on the Wirral. He was posted to the south of England where he played football for Southern Command. Further postings came at RAF Driffield and RAF Full Sutton.
A fine footballer, he played for York City Reserves along with Old Malton St Mary’s, Gleneagles Youth Club, Cliftonville, Scarborough and finally South Kirby Colliery.
He began his cricket career at Castle Howard before going on to play for Gleneagles Youth Club, York Ramblers and finally Dringhouses.
He topped the Senior League first division batting averages in 1969 with 50.71 and had a best score of 146 against Thirsk two years later.
Myerscough was league president for four years from 2007 to 2010 and the current post holder.
“He most generously donated an official ‘president’s chain of office’ to the League as a thank you when his term ended.”
Myerscough owned Robson & Coopers in Lendal, York, which, for many years, supplied equipment for cricket and other sports. It remains well known as a stockist of trophies and medals for a whole range of sports.
RIP George
