Thomas was enlisted in the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment on 21 January 1915 at the age of 48. 

He was discharged on the 5 May 1915 in consequence of varicose veins.
 He had served 72 days! 

His medical record on discharge show that he was 5ft 9 ins high and weighed 140lbs. 

His fully expanded girth was 34 inches.
