Thomas enlisted at the Duke of York Headquarters Chelsea
on the 28th  September 1914 into the 2nd London Division.
He gave his trade as a wheelwright working for M Simmonds & Co, 30 Fleet Street London.

He served in France from June 1916 to November 1916

He was promoted to Staff Serjeant on 21st June 1916

Thomas left France, travelling on the 'Royal George', from  Marseilles on the 11th December 1916, 

arriving at Selonica on the 17th December 1916..
He served in Salonica from December 1916 to July 1917

He left Selonica on the 'Huntcastle' on the 16th July 1917 arriving in Alexandria 

on the 23rd July 1917 where he served in Palestine and Eygpt from August 1917.

Thomas's medical records show that he suffered from defective eye sight through service in the field probably caused by glare on the sand of the desert.

 He was treated at the 76th Casualty Clearing Station Ludd(?) .
He was discharged from 517 Company Royal Army Service Corps on the 4th July 1919.
