Valerie Myerscough was one of the most brilliant mathematicians to study at RHC. When she was only 19 she sat her finals examinations and headed the University List. She was awarded both the Lubbock Prize and Sherbrooke Studentship. She completed her Ph.D within three years and her wide research interests won for her many Visting Professorships at universities in the USA She became a lecturer at Queen Mary College in 1967. Her natural ability was matched by great drive and enthusiasm and she enjoyed friendship and contact with people. An ex-Choir Leader from RHC, she was aloved and valued member of the Philharmonia Chorus. At the time of her death she was secretary of the Royal Astronomical Society, where she was responsible for many social and practical innovations - not least the redecoration of the Society's premises at Burlington House.
